Richmond Animal League (RAL) is partnering with Meals on Wheels of Central Virginia to hold a pet food drive for their Meals for Pets program. The Pet Food Drive will run from now until Friday, September 19, 2009.
“Since the mid-80s, Meals for Pets has provided thousands of pounds of pet food to our Meals on Wheels recipients who have pets,” said Richard Schultz, President of Meals on Wheels. “Because many of our recipients need financial support to pay for their meals, they were also struggling to provide meals for their pets. In fact in some cases recipients were feeding part of their meal to their pets in order to keep them alive. That’s when we realized there was an urgent need to develop a pet food program. We are so grateful to caring community individuals and partners, such as the Richmond Animal League, that allow us to maintain this important client service through their ongoing generous support and donations.”
RAL is collecting unopened dry and canned food for both dogs and cats. We prefer to have canned food be “pop-top” for easier access by many of the program’s elderly clients. Food may be dropped off to at RAL at 11401 International Drive, Richmond, VA 23235. The shelter is located one block off Midlothian Turnpike across from Chesterfield Town Center. RAL will make regular drop offs to the Meals On Wheels office.
Meals on Wheels, a FeedMore organization, delivers nutritious and appealing meals to seniors, people with disabilities and other at-risk populations. As the only home-delivered meal provider in the community, MOW touches the lives of hundreds of seniors and disabled shut-ins in Central Virginia each weekday. More than 2,500 dedicated volunteers deliver more than close to 300,000 meals every year, ensuring that meal recipients have a balanced diet, regular contact with the community, and healthy independence. For more information, call (804) 673-5035 or visit www.mowdelivers.com.
RAL has been giving animals hope and a second chance since 1979. With the economic downturn has come more homeless animals with nowhere to turn. That makes the work RAL does more important than ever. For 30 years, RAL has seen good and bad economic times. No matter what goes on in the human world, the animals keep coming for a helping hand and a loving home.
RAL provides shelter and love to hundreds of companion animals each year until they can be adopted into permanent and loving homes. Richmond Animal League is the area’s oldest non-profit “no-kill” organization committed to reducing the homeless pet population in the Richmond area.
