World’s Ugliest Dog Title goes to Pabst

What does it take to be crowned the ‘Ugliest Dog in the World’?

Well, obviously a scrunched up face, small floppy ears, and an under bite. That pretty much describes the face of Pabst, a 4 year old boxer-mix who was awarded the crown.

Pabst, who was rescued from a shelter in California by Miles Egstad, won the annual award on Friday at the Sonoma Marin Fair in Northern California. Along with the title of World’s Ugliest Dog, he received $1600 in prize money, pet supplies and a modeling contract with House of Dog.

Pabst, like many of the event’s competitors, is a rescue dog — owner Miles Egstad of Citrus Heights, Calif., adopted him from a shelter three years ago.  He’s named for the well-known cheap adult beverage because, Egstad said, he had a “bitter beer face.”

Miss Ellie, who is a blind 15 year old Chinese Crested, won the pedigree category. Miss Ellie is a rescue-dog ambassador who travels to schools and adoption events promoting pet responsibility.  “When I adopted her she wasn’t housebroken and at 7 years old didn’t know a single command,” her owner, Dawn Goehring of Gatlinburg, Tenn., wrote of the Ugly Runner-Up.  “Seven years later she is still not housebroken and still does absolutely nothing!”

Stump Takes Best in Show at Westminster Dog Show

by richmonddogs on February 11, 2009 · 0 comments

westminsterdogshowwinnerA Sussex Spaniel named Stump has taken the grand prize of Best in Show at the Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show!

At 10 years old, Stump is the oldest dog to ever win at Westminster. Stump, who was saved by Vets at Texas A&M University in 2004, beat out nearly 2,500 canine competitors to take the title of top dog.

Surprisingly, Stump came out of retirement only last week!  Earlier in the evening, he won the sporting group, the same title he won in 2004, before going into retirement and becoming ill.

This is the first time a dog of the Sussex Spaniel breed has won the title.

The group winners for 2009 are:

Hound: Scottish Deerhound
Terrier: Scottish Terrier
Non-Sporting: Poodle
Herding: Puli
Sporting: Sussex Spaniel
Working: Giant Schnauzer
Toy: Brussels Griffon

Congratulations Stump!
