Just once, I’d like to see the illustrious Westminster Dog Show “Best In Show” crown go to a Mutt.
You know, a “real dog”—one that is so well-mixed you can’t even guess at it’s origins.
Why? Why not? Who’s to say a purebred is any better than a mixed-breed dog? It’s actually been my experience that the reverse is true.
Now, I mean no disrespect to Sadie, the Scottish Terrier, who actually won “Best in Show” at the Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show this week. Nor do I doubt that any of the fine upstanding pure-breeds in competition were not deserving of their honored titles.
I’d just like to see some mutts in the mix. Who’s with me?

What does it take to be crowned the ‘Ugliest Dog in the World’?
Well, obviously a scrunched up face, small floppy ears, and an under bite. That pretty much describes the face of Pabst, a 4 year old boxer-mix who was awarded the crown.
Pabst, who was rescued from a shelter in California by Miles Egstad, won the annual award on Friday at the Sonoma Marin Fair in Northern California. Along with the title of World’s Ugliest Dog, he received $1600 in prize money, pet supplies and a modeling contract with House of Dog.
Pabst, like many of the event’s competitors, is a rescue dog — owner Miles Egstad of Citrus Heights, Calif., adopted him from a shelter three years ago. He’s named for the well-known cheap adult beverage because, Egstad said, he had a “bitter beer face.”
Miss Ellie, who is a blind 15 year old Chinese Crested, won the pedigree category. Miss Ellie is a rescue-dog ambassador who travels to schools and adoption events promoting pet responsibility. “When I adopted her she wasn’t housebroken and at 7 years old didn’t know a single command,” her owner, Dawn Goehring of Gatlinburg, Tenn., wrote of the Ugly Runner-Up. “Seven years later she is still not housebroken and still does absolutely nothing!”

Pabst isn’t really that ugly, is he? Leave a comment.
